UNICEF and partner organizations work together to address the root causes of child and youth deaths.

On May 13, the Traffic Safety Service of the Department of Public Safety of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the UNICEF Office in Uzbekistan launched the Traffic Safety Week in Uzbekistan as part of a global campaign.

The main purpose of holding World Road Safety Week is to draw attention to road accidents that cause many deaths and injuries. This year, a global campaign has taken measures to reduce the high speed of vehicles on the roads.

“Road accidents are a major cause of injury, disability and even premature death to children and young people around the world. Around the world, about 3,000 children die or are seriously injured in road accidents every day, Munir Mamedzade said.

In the first three months of this year, 1,469 traffic accidents were registered in Uzbekistan, of which 204 involved children. 39 were fatal. Most of the victims are teenagers. The main causes of traffic accidents were speeding (455), non-compliance with traffic rules (110) and lack of necessary infrastructure (250), including lack of pedestrian crossings (804).

“Recently, a large-scale work has been carried out in Uzbekistan to reduce the number of road accidents. A special Republican commission on road safety has been set up under the leadership of the Prime Minister. Events under the motto "Traffic discipline begins in childhood" are being held in all regions. But we must not forget that ensuring traffic safety on the roads is not the sole responsibility of officials and agencies. This is a common task for all of us, - said Olim Saidov.

The experience of some countries shows that it is possible to completely prevent road accidents with a reasonable investment. The event considered measures that could significantly reduce child mortality in road accidents.
