Government decision: Decree of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan ¹ÏÏ-803 “On implementation of Project “Rural Basic Education Development” with participation of Asian Development Bank” from 28th February 2008; Order of Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Uzbekistan ¹253-ô from 7.05.2008.
Project regions: Kashkadarya, Surkhandarya and Tashkent regions.
Main objective:
The Rural Basic Education Project will help reduce disparities in education quality between rural and urban areas by assisting the Government of the Republic of Uzbekistan in improving the quality standards in rural schools in selected regions.
Project components:
Component 1 – School upgrading. Component aimed at modernization of project schools, via procurement of classes with lab equipment and furniture, and libraries - with teaching materials.
Component 2 – Teacher development. Component aimed at improvement of teaching via upgrading teachers’ potential and skills.
Component 3 – Community participation. Component aimed at school life improvement, by involvement of school boards and local community into school life.
Work implemented under the project
Component 1. 754 rural schools have been identified as first and second batch to participate in the Project, i.e. Kashkadarya region – 256 schools, Surkhandarya region – 250 schools and Tashkent region – 248 schools.
Competitive bids for procurement of first batch of 438 schools with lab equipment and class furniture were held and contracts were signed. Competitive bids for procurement of second batch of 316 schools were held, bid results are being evaluated presently.
Component 2. Program and materials for training of TTI trainers and DOE methodologists are developed by the group of consultants under the component. Needs-oriented training modules are worked out as well. Related trainings are being conducted in project regions since 10th of May.
Component 3. Program and training materials on community involvement into school life for school boards, related staff of schools, DOE and TTIs are worked out by individual consultants under this component. Related trainings for regional TTIs’ trainers as well as regional and district DOE methodologists were held under this component.
